Once upon a time, a farmer examined his precise furrows. He had planted seed and was dying to see the first sprouts break the topsoil and reach for the sky. He had no guarantee, of course, they would actually do this. But as he put the seed in the ground, he was confident the seed would germinate and begin growing. He wasn't certain, but it seemed likely the seed would follow the typical pattern and sprout.
I often think faith is like the wondrous nature of seeds. Like the farmer planting seed for a harvest, faith is expressed as a precise set of actions. For example, if I pray, I express faith. If I participate in a tradition, I express faith. If I attend Christmas mass, I express faith. If I recite a confession or creed, I could be expressing faith.
Christianity, in all its diverse forms, expresses faith. But it is not defined by any specific action. Instead, It is defined by
the One in whom we have faith, not the actions themselves.
This One is diverse. Within God's very being lay this pattern of diversity expressed in Father, Son, Spirit. God's wonderful diversity is expressed in God's very self and made tangible reality through a diverse ecosystem; namely, God's people. Truly, we are made in God's image.
This often proves to be a stumbling block for the church. Faith gets pigeonholed into a single kind of action. This, I think, is a relic of the medieval church which worked feveriously to express itself through uniformity. In this period, the church moved from faith to "The Faith" and sought to sustain itself by any means necessary. If there is a relic in the Christian church and theology, surely this is it.
Imagine the farmer walking through the furrows pulling out every sprout that didn't conform exactly to the first one that germinated and sprouted. He would have a poor harvest indeed! It is time for God's people to anticipate a wonderfully diverse harvest. And we know that the harvest will itself germinate from the Triune God in all Her diversity.
